Fundação Eugénio de Almeida

The Eugénio de Almeida Foundation is an institution of private law and public utility, headquartered in Évora. Its Statutes were drafted by Vasco Maria Eugénio de Almeida, who created it in 1963.
The first phase of the life of the Foundation was marked by the personality of this great patron and philanthropist, who ensured the effective direction of the Institution until his death in 1975.
In this period, the objectives set out in the By-Laws were embodied in the re-creation of the Cartuja Convent as a center of spiritual life, in the construction of the Oratory of S. José, aimed at the educational and vocational training of thousands of children and in 1964, and in collaboration with the Society of Jesus of ISESE - Évora Higher Economic and Social Institute, which started the restoration of the University of Évora and trained hundreds of staff and senior public and private administration officials.
Since the 1980s, after the return of expropriated goods during the Agrarian Reform period, the Foundation has begun a phase of recovery of assets and created an agricultural and industrial exploitation of reference that aims to guarantee the economic self-sustainability of the Institution and the pursuit contribute to the promotion of economic and social development in the region. In this project, we highlight the viticulture and olive cultivation, activities resulting from the wines produced at the Cartuxa Winery, among which the emblematic Pêra-Manca and Cartuxa, and the oils produced at the Cartuxa Winery.
