Smirnoff was created by Piotr Arsenieyevish Smirnov in the 1860s in Muscovy.
During the October Revolution, the distillery was confiscated and the family had to flee. Vladimir, Piotr''s successor, reestablished the factory in Istanbul in 1920. He later began selling under the French pronunciation of the name, "Smirnoff." The new product was quite successful and came to be exported to most European countries in the late 1930s.
