Dark amber central color and lighter rim, reminiscent of a young Colheita style Port. Peppery and with a beautiful complexity, a consequence of aging in cask longer than usual. The hazelnuts reveal smoothly through the less and less evident fruit. In the mouth, it has a charming acidity, making it spicy and elegant, with great complexity and balance. Quite spicy, moving from fresh fruit notes to hazelnuts and prunes. Fresh and parallel delicate and very long finish.
Garrafeira is the finest and most elegant Port, which is at its best when enjoyed alone in good company.
The second generation of the Niepoort family, at the end of the 19th century, had the happy idea of purchasing from a German glassmaker in Oldenburg about 4000 blown demijohns, made of dark green glass, with varying capacities between 8 and 11 litres, which we now call "demijohns". Eduard Karel Jacob van der Niepoort died early and it was his son, Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk's grandfather, who gave the destination to the "demijohns", having bottled the best wines from the 1931 harvest, and thus created the type "Garrafeira Niepoort ". Since the distant year of 1931 until today, maturation in the "demijohns" sealed with a cork stopper has been closely monitored, being an almost "sacred" ritual for the Niepoort and Nogueira families.
