Enxarrama wine is very red and full-bodied, crystalline, tart-smelling, not smooth, with a warm, soft flavour and a pronounced aftertaste (...). It's not an alcoholic wine, nor is it aromatic, it's a strong, full-bodied wine, which, because of its tannin, can tolerate its volume in alcohol (...) Perhaps because of these reasons, and almost as much because of its other qualities, it is more sought after than any other from Évora for retail sale in Lisbon warehouses.

Enxarrama wine has existed since the end of the 13th century and is one of Évora's oldest recorded wine-growing areas. The wine was named after Évora's most important river, now known as Xarrama. At the end of the 19th century, before phylloxera, it was considered the best wine in the region, according to Ferreira Lapa in 1867: ‘Of all the wines in the region of Évora, Enxarrama is the most appreciated and obtains the best price (...) it is more sought after than any other (...) for retail sale in the warehouses of the capital (...). In Évora there are other places more or less named for their wines; among them Pêra Manca.’ In this edition, in the place where the Enxarrama river rises, in our cellar, we are doing our best to recover this very important and iconic wine from the wine history of the Alentejo and Portugal.
