The name Robustus pays homage to the first Douro wine, produced by Dirk Niepoort, Robustus 1990, which was never sold. Since 2004 Robustus has been vinified according to the methods used in the production of traditional wines. The long aging in old wooden barrels imprints maturity, complexity, softens the tannins and gives the wine precision and balance, without losing all its vigor and aromatic freshness. The Robustus comes from our oldest vineyards, facing north, where acidity and tannic structure are high. In an extremely hot region, with the diversity of terroirs and the wisdom of the old vines, it is possible to produce fresh and long-keeping wines.
