The history of Periquita dates back to the beginning of José Maria da Fonseca's own history, when the company's founder, Mr. José Maria da Fonseca, purchased, around 1846, the Cova da Periquita property. The wine produced in Cova da Periquita soon proved to be the best in the region, leading other owners to ask José Maria da Fonseca for sticks of that variety to plant on their own properties. For Periquita Superyor 2009, this French Castelão from Vinhas Velhas was trodden by feet and aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels.
