AVELEDAAveleda is a name which spans several generations. The first records of the sale of bottled wine date back to 1870, with Manuel Pedro Guedes (1837-1899), known for his strong enterprising spirit and believed to be the founder of the business as we know it today. His work bore fruit and the quality of the Aveleda wines started to be recognised, as the gold medals won in the international competitions in Berlin (1888) and Paris (1889) attest.Today the Guedes family still owns 100% of the company, always committed to maintaining this family legacy which spans several generations. The son of Manuel Pedro Guedes, Fernando Guedes da Silva da Fonseca (1871-1946) continued his father’s work, significantly increasing the production capacity at the Estate. He had 7 children and it was Roberto Van-Zeller Guedes (1899-1966) who led the family business, dedicating his whole life to working at Aveleda. The 4th generation includes the six children of Roberto Van-Zeller Guedes: Fernando, Luís, António, Maria Isabel, Maria Helena and Roberto – who today manage the company’s future, together with the following generation: 14 cousins who make up the 5th generation.

Of a medium yellow, the color of Manoel Pedro Guedes hints the time this wine spent ageing. The blend of hand-picked Alvarinho and Loureiro grapes presents a perfectly harmonious bouquet: notes of jasmine, vanilla blossom and lime zest, blend with soft hints of pinapple. On the palate, this wine starts to reveal its essence: an unique minerality, backed by a buttery body that fills your senses. The vibrant notes of ripe grapefruit, pinapple and lime are followed by more discreet aromas of wet gravel and a slight hint of vanilla. A wine to be unveiled in the glass with time.

Manoel Pedro Guedes is a wine that is the result of a meticulous viticulture and winemaking, complemented by a rigorous selection throughout the whole production process. Inspired by the first blend created at Quinta da Aveleda, only the best grapes of Loureiro and Alvarinho coming from the best parcels of the Quinta go into this wine. The harvest is manual and the grapes are transported in small containers of 15kg and cooled on their way to the vinification centre. At this stage, the grapes are berry-picked and then very gently pressed. The wine ferments in stainless steel vats (50%) and in French oak casks (50%) and then ages for 8 months: 50% stainless steel and 50% French oak where half is new wood and the other half old casks. Only as small portion of the wine is bottled, only the best samples from stainless steel vats and oak casks go into the final blend. This final blend is then bottled and aged for 1 year.
